RESEARCHING THE COMPANY

There are a lot of sources of information on public companies. One of the best sites is hoovers.com, which provides on each company some financial information, names of key executives, and product information, as well as company news and competitors’ names. Some of it is free, but the best is usually available for a fee, which is modest
for a month’s trial. A free site is finance.yahoo.com, which provides a lot of financial information and often one or more investment analyst reports, which are particularly useful in identifying company problems. Another good source is Valueline.com, which provides for a fee a very valuable one-page summary of the company’s finances,
operations, and major problems. Many libraries subscribe to Valueline reports in printed document form. SEC extensive financial and operational reports are available at sec.gov/edgarhp.htm. Stockbrokers often can also furnish useful information on these companies.
