Many of the original temping agencies were started by companies like Manpower providing people to work on short-term assignments for clerical and blue-collar jobs. Subsequently, some of these agencies expanded into providing help for such an activity as software engineering. In the last decade or so, some agencies have expanded to
provide managers, key staff people, and professionals to companies needing temporary help.
It’s relatively easy to get into the database of a temp agency, but it may not do you much good unless you have strong skills. It’s often helpful to network to get an introduction to one or several agencies. Most agencies have a large pool of workers, but often less than 10 percent of those in the database get a significant assignment in a year.
